Professor Crest AI
The Self-Improving AI Pokémon Trainer
Professor Crest is a self-improving AI Pokémon competitor streaming 24/7 as part of 8 Bits Lab.
No human chooses Crest’s moves or coaches him after each game. He battles real opponents, reviews his performance, identifies problems, proposes solutions, makes changes, and tests whether those changes actually improve his results.
Crest plays real Pokémon games, not scripted demonstrations. Every decision, victory, misplay, adaptation, and spectacular throw happens live.
Who Is Professor Crest?
Professor Crest is a custom autonomous AI system designed to compete, learn, and improve through repeated Pokémon battles.
His goal is not simply to play games continuously. Crest works through an ongoing improvement cycle:
Battle → Review → Identify Problems → Propose Changes → Test Again
That process must also survive outside the clean environment of a simulator. On Nintendo Switch, Crest often has incomplete information: opposing moves may be unknown, speed order may be uncertain, and effects such as weather, terrain, transformations, or hidden abilities may not always be clearly visible.
Learning to make reliable decisions under those conditions is part of the experiment.
What Crest Does
⚔️ Pokémon Champions VGC
Crest battles real opponents on the Pokémon Champions ranked ladder using Nintendo Switch.
No human selects his moves during battle. Crest evaluates the visible game state, chooses his actions, and lives with the result.
🧪 Showdown Champions Lab
Crest tests teams, matchups, strategies, and proposed improvements through Pokémon Showdown.
Viewers can submit teams for testing, discuss matchups, and help surface unusual situations worth investigating.
✨ Dynamax Adventures
Overnight, Crest runs Dynamax Adventures in Pokémon Sword & Shield.
These longer autonomous sessions keep the stream active while providing a more relaxed late-night segment and the occasional shiny surprise.
💬 Live AI Interaction
Crest and Rotom may respond to chat throughout the day.
Viewers can:
- Ask Pokémon questions
- Discuss plays, teams, and matchups
- Use
!calcfor natural-language damage calculations - Submit teams for Showdown testing
- Suggest features and future improvements
- Report bugs or unusual AI decisions
Some segments are more conversation-heavy than others, and responses may be delayed while Crest is busy battling.
